Two days later, On March 3, 1994, Cobain's wife, Hole leader Courtney Love joined her husband in Rome while he was convalescing from a rather sudden throat ailment.
His voice had given out a few days before, causing the cancellation of his band’s European tour. Kurt was laying in bed, (although Kurt could have depressions, he was never officialy diagnosed of having depressions. Not a single family member or friend knew that Kurt was suicidal. He never talked about it. The suicide stories where only being told after Kurt's death. But when he was alive nobody, not him not his wife, not his friends ever said something about Kurt being depressed. Kurt himself told a few times that he didn't care if he was in a band or being alive but that came from the stomach pains he had for years. His condition was diagnosed and cured in 1993 with the right medicine)
A few hours before Courtney arrived at the hotel in Rome, she gave an interview to Select magazine. During the interview Courtney Love brought out a box of rohypnol and placed it on the table in front of the journalist. She then popped several of the pills. Rohypnol is considered a “date rape drug” as side effects from ingestion include incapacitation and anterograde amnesia. The prescription was in Courtney’s name. Courtney was out shopping in Rome by herself. She told this in the interview in Select Magazine in 1994. While Courtney was shopping and Kurt was in their hotel room, he wrote a letter to his wife that he wanted to quit Nirvana, go solo, take all the money and divorce her. (Courtney later claimed she burned the note in Rome, because it was a nasty letter)When Courtney came back to the hotel room, she must have known that she would lose everything she worked so hard for all those years: the money, the fame, her reputation as the ambitious wife of Cobain. If they would divorce, Courtney wouldn't get anything or a small percentage. If Kurt would die, she would inherit everything. Nirvana's music and merchandise is worth millions and since Kurt didn't want to perform anymore and wanted to leave her, Courtney wanted Kurt out of the picture. And since Kurt was a drug addict anyway, nobody would ask questions if he would die of an overdose she must have thought. At some point roomservice was ordered and Courtney took a lot of Rohypnol pills and put it in their/Kurt's champagne. Rohypnol can’t be tasted, or smelled in a drink.
The Rome Overdose
March 3, 1994 Kurt Cobain overdosed at his hotel in Rome, found unresponsive, and was admitted to the hospital. Kurt was rushed to the Umberto I Polyclinic Hospital, and had his stomach pumped. He was in a coma then transferred to Rome American Hospital, where he regained consciousness later. Courtney Love said later about the Rome incident in a 1994 interview with Select Magazine:
''Anyway, what I wanted to say to you was that all this was just a tiff between me and Kurt, OK? That was all it was. A tiff. He was just upset that he was in some awful place and I was away enjoying myself and shopping. It was not a suicide thing... So now we're going back to the therapist when it all calms down."
Statement of Gold Mountain management after his overdose in Rome:" Kurt insisted it was not a suicide note. He just took all of his and Courtney's money and was going to run away and disappear."
Remember that Kurt Cobain had called his attorney Rosemary Carroll and asked for her to draw up divorce papers two days prior to this event.
Everyone including Kurt and Courtney later said that what happened in Rome was an accident. Later Courtney tells to everyone that Kurt had swallowed 50 pills!! 50 pills is not an accident but a suicide attempt.
Dr. Galetta who treated Kurt in Rome denied it was a suicide attempt and said Kurt did NOT ingest that amount of pills, and he was familiar with suicide attempts, and the overdose was NOT a suicide attempt. He stated Kurt was not, and did not seem suicidal at all. and said the following:
"Cobain doesn't know what happened to him. He hasn't gained complete control of his memory. When he emerged from the coma, he was very hungry and asked for a strawberry milkshake!" "The last image I have of him, which in the light of the tragedy now seems pathetic, is of a young man playing with the little girl (Frances). He did not seem like a young man who wanted to end it all."
As a matter of fact, her story changed a few times about the time of morning she found Kurt unresponsive in their hotelroom in Rome. Was it 4:30 am or 5:30 am? When Kurt and Courtney came home at their Seattle house at the beginning of March 1994, the arguments and fights went on and it only went worse. Courtney controlled Kurt in every way, she was jalous and wanted to know every move Kurt made.
Report written on march 18, 1994.
In the early evening of March 18th, 1994 Courtney Love called the Seattle police because she said that Kurt had locked himself in a closet with guns and was going to kill himself: Police arrived on the scene at the rock couple’s house to discover Love screaming outside on the front porch: “He locked himself in a room! He’s gotta gun! He’s gonna f***ing kill himself!” Edwards then informed Love that he would have to wait for backup to arrive before he could enter the house. “Well, if you’re not gonna do anything, then just get the f*** out of here!” Love shouted.” Nevertheless, the report says that Courtney Love dialed 911, "for his safety... knowing he had access to guns."
Instead, when the police officers attempted to enter the house through the backdoor, they discovered an unarmed Kurt Cobain standing in the backyard with his hands in his pockets.”
“Moreover, Cobain did not appear suicidal; rather, he seemed deeply embarrassed by the situation. “He just really wanted to get out of there,” said one of the police officers. He disclosed that Cobain ‘calmly’ walked with the officer to sit in the backseat of his squad car to discuss the circumstances of the disturbance call. Recounting the events of that evening, the officer recollected that Kurt did not appear to be under the influence of any drugs.
Fom police records: After interviewing Cobain, the guns where taken into custody. Courtney Love stated that she did not see Kurt with a gun, and he did not say he was going to kill himself.

Incident report Seattle Police Department, March 18th, 1994.
Courtney first claimed that Kurt had locked himself in a room with guns, was suicidal and that he was going to kill himself. When Kurt said that he wasn't suicidal and didn't want to kill himself, Courtney changed her story and said she didn't see Kurt with a gun.
More strange events occured in the month of March 1994. The police report states:” As an addendum, I had been dispatched to the Cobain residence within the last month(this was written after Kurt's death) to respond to a 911 hang up call. On arrival I had contacted Courtney Love, Cobain's wife, who had stated she had called 911 because she was depressed. I saw no injury to Love. I heard a small child's voice, and asked who was caring for the child. Love replied:” My husband, he's in the next room”. Cobain had just recently recoverd from a substance abuse induced in Rome. I asked Kurt what was going on, and he stated that there was a lot of stress in their relationship currently. Cobain stated that they should probably seek counseling and I advised him to do that. There was no apparent need for police intervention, and with Love and Cobain's assurances that they work things out, I left the residence."
Police was called regularly. Incident Report's where written. In June 1993, Courtney called the police to say that she and Kurt where in an argument over guns in the household. That Courtney threw a glass of juice in Kurt's face and that he pushed her in return. She said that he wanted to choke her, leaving her a scratch. Courtney stated that she had self inflicted the scratch to her forearm with a piece of glass.
We can conclude that Courtney wanted Kurt out of the way since 1993. Courtney faked situations to make it appear as if Kurt attacked her and wanted to kill himself all the time. At this point, Love, along with Cobain’s other family members, band mates and management company, began talking to a number of intervention counselors.
The Intervention
On March 25, roughly 10 friends — including band mates Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear, Nirvana manager John Silva, Billig, longtime friend Dylan Carlson, Love and Goldberg gathered at Cobain’s home on Seattle’s Lake Washington Boulevard to take a different approach with a new intervention counselor. As part of the intervention (We will talk more about this intervention later!) Love threatened to leave Cobain, and Smear and Novoselic said they would break up the band if Cobain didn’t check into rehab. Kurt was really pissed since his wife and his friends and band mates where are all drug users themselves. And now they force him to go to rehab. Kurt obviously didn't want to go. He was angry and walked away from the intervention. It was not an easy thing for Courtney to get Kurt away from everything and everyone. Since she has tried since March the 3th. And since Kurt walked away from intervention, Courtney had only one option left: use Frances.
The next day on March the 26th, Courtney forced Kurt again to go to rehab or he wouldn't see his daughter anymore. Since he loved his daughter very much, there was nothing else to do then to go a rehab facility.
On March the 30th, Kurt Cobain asked Dylan Carlson (Dylan Carlson was Kurt's and Courtney's friend.) to buy a gun for him because, Kurt said, there were trespassers on Cobain’s property. “He was going out to L.A.,” Carlson says. “It seemed kind of weird that he was buying the shotgun before he was leaving. So I offered to hold on to it until he got back.” Kurt, however, insisted on keeping the shotgun himself. The police believe that Cobain dropped the weapon off at his home and left Seattle to check himself into rehab.
If Kurt was so suicidal, why didn't he use the gun the same day he and Dylan bought it?
Why go to rehab if you want to end your life?
“He seemed normal, we’d been talking,” Carlson says. “Plus, I’d loaned him guns before.”
Carlson believes Cobain didn’t want to buy the shotgun himself because he was afraid the police would confiscate it, since they had taken his other firearms after the domestic dispute that had occurred 12 days earlier.
